PICASSO WITHIN REACH

Sotheby's to hold special auction of ceramics by Pablo Picasso

SOTHEBY'S is delighted to present an auction dedicated to ceramics by Pablo Picasso at Olympia on Wednesday, October 26, 2005. While sales in this field were pioneered by Sotheby's in the late 1980s, this auction will be the first of its type for 10 years. Renewed interest in Picasso's charismatic, colourful designs has inspired the sale, with new collectors recognising the great value and ideal entry point into collecting that they represent.

A wonderful and varied selection of ceramics will be presented with over 100 plates, bowls, jugs, tiles and vases decorated with classic Picasso motifs. Two distinguished private collections will form the auction's core, including numbered editions, unique works and several rare examples. Estimates range from £1,000-£35,000 and each individual piece offers a fantastic opportunity to acquire a work by the greatest master of twentieth century art at a fraction of the cost of a painting or sculpture by him.

Picasso became interested in ceramics after seeing the work of the Madoura Pottery at a craft fair in the south of France in 1946. The Madoura Pottery was run by Suzanne and Georges Ramié, who on seeing the artist's enthusiasm for their work invited him to visit their studio. They provided him with the opportunity to experiment and work in clay, an opportunity Picasso relished. The couple gave him space in their studio to use whenever he visited and in return he authorised them to produce limited editions of his designs. In addition though, Picasso also made individual ceramic pieces which he retained, on the whole, for his own private collection. The majority of these are now in the hands of his family and museum collections.

Between 1947-1971 more than 600 different plates, bowls, vases and pitchers were produced by Picasso and the Madoura Pottery, mostly made in limited editions ranging from 25 to 500. Picasso's involvement in their execution varied between working on the clay mould designs and undertaking the decoration.

Included in the forthcoming sale will be a striking painted and glazed earthenware vase entitled Tripode. The vase, illustrated above, was executed in 1951 in a numbered edition of 75. It was one of Picasso's earliest designs and also one of his largest, measuring 75.5cm in height. It is the most valuable piece in the sale with a saleroom estimate of £28,000-£35,000. Other works worthy of note will include a painted and partially glazed earthenware pitcher entitled Femme du Barbu and an earthenware plate entitled Visage de Femme. Femme du Barbu (illustrated overleaf - second lot from left) was conceived in 1953, in an edition of 500, and is expected to fetch £4,000-£6,000. Visage de Femme (illustrated below left) is estimated at £5,000-£7,000 - it was executed the same year and is one of an edition of 400. A painted terracotta dish executed in 1957 is also of interest. Entitled Hibou aux ailes déployées and illustrated below right, it is one of 200 made and is expected to fetch £4,000-£6,000.

Two very rare earthenware tiles will be further highlights as they are both 'unique' works by Picasso. The first tile dates from 1956 and is being sold in fine condition. It is entitled Tête de Faune IV and is estimated at £9,000-£12,000. The second tile is painted and partially glazed and also dates from 1956. Estimated at £8,000-£12,000, it is entitled Tête de Faune VIII. A Picasso ceramic design cast in silver is also sure to attract a great deal of interest. The plate was conceived in 1956 and cast in silver by Francois and Pierre Hugo in Paris in an edition of 20 works. Entitled Tête dans un Carré, it is expected to fetch upwards of £15,000.

In addition to the large collection of Picasso ceramics in the sale, there will also be a small group of works by the French artist Jean Cocteau (1889-1963). Cocteau executed a number of designs under Picasso's influence in the late 1950s. A painted and partially glazed white earthenware plate, entitled Oprhée et Euridyce, is one of the highlights and is estimated at £1,800-£2,500.
